IQOS ILUMA i vs Ploom AURA: Technology and Compatibility

  • Post category:Comparisons

IQOS ILUMA i vs Ploom AURA is a comparison of two different stick-heating systems. The meaningful differences are where heating takes place, how sessions are controlled, which consumables are supported and what maintenance each device requires.

This guide compares the standard two-piece IQOS ILUMA i with Ploom AURA. It uses IQOS UK documentation and Japanese Ploom specifications, with separately labelled Polish and German support details. Manufacturer figures are not NARNAY measurements.

Quick answer

What is the main difference?

ILUMA i combines a separate Holder and Pocket Charger with SMARTCORE induction heating, a Touch Screen and a conditional Pause Mode. AURA is an integrated device built around SMART HEATFLOW and four selectable heating profiles. Their stick families are not interchangeable. [1] [2] [3]

The key comparison: IQOS changes how a session is managed; Ploom offers a choice of heating profiles and session lengths. Counting “two modes versus four” misses that difference.

How the heating systems differ

IQOS: the element is inside the stick

With SMARTCORE, the Holder’s induction system activates a metal heating element inside the compatible stick. The Holder therefore does not need the piercing blade used by older IQOS platforms. [5]

The metal element is part of the consumable design. It is not an accessory to transfer between sticks or devices.

Ploom: a HeatFlow chamber and profiles

AURA uses the SMART HEATFLOW platform and its Heat Select profiles. JT describes controlled heating temperatures; Ploom’s documentation describes the HeatFlow chamber used with its own stick formats. [2] [6]

This is a separate device–consumable system. A shared description such as “bladeless” does not make it compatible with SMARTCORE sticks.

Brand names for heating technology are not a standardised performance scale. They do not, by themselves, establish taste, nicotine delivery, reliability or health risk.

Can IQOS and Ploom use the same sticks?

No. IQOS UK names TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA for ILUMA devices. Ploom Japan lists EVO and the MEVIUS and CAMEL sticks made for Ploom, and expressly warns against other manufacturers’ sticks. German documentation separately confirms LYO for Ploom. [7] [8] [9]

Four heating profiles are not the same as two battery modes

AURA’s profiles change the heating programme and session duration. ILUMA i’s FlexBattery settings govern Holder use between charges and the availability of features such as Pause. A numerical “4 versus 2” comparison would combine unlike settings.

What IQOS Performance and Eco actually mean

IQOS describes up to three consecutive uses without Pause, or two uses with Pause available for one of them. Polish IQOS support explains Eco as one use per Holder charge, with Pause unavailable. This is a Holder setting, not a claim that the Pocket Charger supplies only one session. [12] [13]

The distinction also matters when comparing Ploom generations. Our AURA vs Ploom X Advanced comparison covers that separate question.

Pause Mode and FlexPuff have separate limits

Pause is an interruption feature

IQOS UK documents a pause of up to eight minutes for ILUMA i. It is available in Performance Mode within the initial three minutes or eight puffs, while the screen indicates eligibility. If the session is not resumed within the pause window, it ends. Pause is available for one of the two consecutive uses described by IQOS. [3]

Eight minutes is the maximum interruption, not an extra eight minutes of active heating. The AURA documentation reviewed for this comparison does not describe an equivalent pause-and-resume feature.

FlexPuff is a conditional extension

IQOS states that FlexPuff may add four puffs to the base 14, still within the maximum six-minute session. Activation depends on use, is designed for tobacco sticks and does not occur when Pause is used. Therefore, neither “18 puffs every time” nor “FlexPuff with every compatible stick” is a reliable description. [14]

AURA’s lack of a fixed puff-count cap does not remove its session timer. Its three-, five- or six-minute boundary still applies. [15]

Controls and apps: two different interfaces

ILUMA i puts status information and Pause gestures on the Holder’s Touch Screen. AURA uses a light strip, vibration and a button area. Both document automatic starting, so Auto-Start alone does not distinguish this pair. [7] [18]

The IQOS UK app page lists Performance/Eco selection and device customisation. Ploom Japan lists heating-mode selection, device lock, radar, battery status and firmware updates when released. Those lists describe supported functions, not a measured comparison of app stability or usability. [16] [17]

For Japanese AURA, the documented routes are My Ploom on Android and Connect Browser on iOS. Changing modes requires the supported connection route; do not assume that another country’s app or account setup is identical. [19]

Model-specific IQOS questions are covered in the ILUMA i features and controls FAQ.

Battery claims: separate full charges from consecutive uses

A full-charge rating and a consecutive-use rating answer different questions. On ILUMA i, the Holder can need the Pocket Charger even while the charger itself still has energy. AURA has no separate Holder to return to a case.

Full charging timeAbout 135 min for the Pocket ChargerAbout 180 min from empty with the specified adapter

AURA’s 27-stick maximum is not its five-minute Standard-mode rating. Eco’s published session is shorter. Comparing 27 with 20 without the mode and duration makes the battery difference look simpler than it is.

Battery condition, temperature and use can change the results. The charging figures also depend on the manufacturer’s specified charging equipment; they are not interchangeable with partial-charge or Holder-recharge times.

Cleaning is a real maintenance difference

IQOS says ILUMA devices do not require the internal cleaning associated with its older blade models. A two-piece device still needs clean charging contacts: IQOS specifies a soft, dry cloth. “No internal cleaning” is narrower than “no care required.” [21]

Ploom Japan advises cleaning AURA monthly, or when stick insertion becomes tight or the slide-cover surface is dirty. Its instructions require cooling and removing the front panel before the cleaning procedure to avoid unintended automatic heating. [22]

What this comparison cannot establish

There is no NARNAY hands-on test behind this article. The source material supports a comparison of hardware, published timings, compatibility and documented controls. It does not support a taste score or a universal winner.

  • Taste and draw: these need a stated assessment method and the exact consumables, not a conclusion from a mode name.
  • Nicotine delivery: a heating profile, puff limit or session length is not an absorbed-dose measurement.
  • Battery endurance: manufacturer session counts were not generated in one shared test.
  • Long-term reliability: a specification sheet does not establish failure rates.
  • Health risk: heating temperature and maintenance requirements are not a basis for ranking one device as safer.

CDC states that heated tobacco use is harmful and nicotine is addictive. Neither system should be described as harmless on the strength of its heating technology. [23]

NARNAY assessment

Final verdict: session controls versus heating profiles

The clearest distinction is architectural. ILUMA i separates the Holder from its charger and adds a screen-based interruption feature. AURA keeps the device in one body and offers time-limited heating profiles.

For interpreting the specification sheets, three rules matter: keep the stick platforms separate, distinguish heating modes from battery modes, and attach the operating conditions to every endurance claim.

Those differences are supported by the documentation. A claim that either device delivers better taste, greater nicotine exposure or lower health risk would require different evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use TEREA in Ploom AURA?

No. TEREA belongs to the IQOS ILUMA platform. Japanese AURA guidance lists its Ploom-specific families and warns against other manufacturers’ sticks. Similar dimensions do not establish compatibility. [8]

Can EVO or LYO be used in IQOS ILUMA i?

No. Neither is an IQOS SMARTCORE consumable. LYO’s manufacturer also expressly states that it is not compatible with other heated tobacco systems. [7] [10]

Does Ploom AURA have an IQOS-style Pause Mode?

The AURA documents reviewed here do not list an equivalent pause-and-resume function. Its heating-mode selection should not be described as Pause. ILUMA i’s documented pause has a specific eligibility window and time limit. [3] [17]

Are the Eco modes equivalent?

No. AURA Eco is a three-minute heating profile with a higher published stick count. ILUMA i Eco changes the Holder’s battery-use behaviour to one session between Holder charges. [11] [13]

Does FlexPuff always give 18 puffs?

No. Additional puffs are conditional, remain within the six-minute limit and do not activate when Pause is used. IQOS describes FlexPuff for tobacco sticks, not every nicotine-containing consumable. [14]

Does AURA always last for 27 sticks?

No. About 27 is the Japanese Eco-mode estimate. Standard is about 20, and the published counts vary with battery condition and temperature. [11] [20]

Do both devices need internal cleaning?

IQOS does not prescribe routine internal cleaning for ILUMA i. Ploom does prescribe periodic AURA chamber cleaning. Charging contacts and exterior care remain separate maintenance tasks. [21] [22]

Does a lower heating temperature mean lower health risk?

Temperature alone cannot establish that conclusion. This comparison has no device-specific health-risk assessment, and heated tobacco products are not risk-free. [23]
