IQOS ILUMA basics
Essential answers about the original ILUMA generation and how it differs from earlier and newer IQOS devices.
What is IQOS ILUMA?
IQOS ILUMA is a family of heated-stick devices using the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM. Instead of placing an exposed heating blade inside the tobacco, the device heats a metal element contained within each compatible SMARTCORE stick.
The original family includes IQOS ILUMA PRIME, IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA ONE.
Does IQOS ILUMA have a heating blade?
No. IQOS ILUMA uses bladeless induction heating. There is no ceramic blade inside the Holder to insert into the tobacco.
This reduces the risk of blade breakage and removes the need to brush tobacco residue from around a heating blade.
What is the difference between IQOS ILUMA and older IQOS devices?
Older models such as IQOS 3 DUO and IQOS ORIGINALS use a ceramic heating blade and are designed for HEETS. IQOS ILUMA uses induction technology and requires SMARTCORE sticks such as compatible TEREA.
The two consumable formats are not interchangeable. Using the wrong stick can cause poor performance or damage.
What is the difference between IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i?
Both generations use the same basic bladeless SMARTCORE induction platform. The newer ILUMA i generation adds features unavailable on the original ILUMA models.
- Touch Screen on ILUMA i and i PRIME
- Pause Mode
- FlexPuff
- FlexBattery modes
- Up to three consecutive Holder uses in supported conditions
Original ILUMA and ILUMA PRIME provide up to two consecutive Holder uses and do not have these newer features.
How can I tell whether I have ILUMA or ILUMA i?
Remove the Holder and inspect its controls. If it has an interactive circular Touch Screen rather than a conventional button and status lights, it belongs to the newer ILUMA i generation.
You can also check the model name printed on the original packaging, device information screen or regional IQOS app.
Is IQOS ILUMA PRIME better than IQOS ILUMA?
Not in basic heating performance. Both devices use the same technology, support two consecutive Holder uses and provide similar battery capacity.
ILUMA PRIME mainly offers a more premium Pocket Charger design and materials. Standard ILUMA is the more practical choice if appearance is not a priority.
What is the difference between IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA ONE?
IQOS ILUMA uses a lightweight Holder that is recharged inside a separate Pocket Charger. ILUMA ONE combines the battery and heating chamber inside one device.
ILUMA and PRIME are more convenient for repeated use because the Pocket Charger recharges the Holder. ILUMA ONE is simpler to carry and can provide up to approximately 20 uses before being connected to USB-C power.
Is the original IQOS ILUMA still worth using?
Yes, if the device is in good condition. It uses the same SMARTCORE stick format and requires no routine internal cleaning.
However, when choosing between an original ILUMA and ILUMA i at a similar price, the newer ILUMA i is the stronger option because it adds smart features and can provide an additional consecutive Holder use.
Is IQOS ILUMA a vape?
No. IQOS ILUMA is a heated-stick device. It uses solid tobacco or nicotine-containing sticks rather than e-liquid, pods or a refillable tank.
How to use IQOS ILUMA
Correct stick insertion and preheating help prevent interrupted sessions and poor aerosol production.
How do I use IQOS ILUMA or IQOS ILUMA PRIME?

How do I turn IQOS ILUMA on or off?
On IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA PRIME, press and hold the Pocket Charger button for approximately four seconds.
On ILUMA ONE, press and hold the button on the device for approximately four seconds. The status lights will indicate that it has switched on or off.
How far should I insert a TEREA or other SMARTCORE stick?
Insert the stick with its filter facing upward until the line printed on the filter reaches the top of the Holder or device.
Do not twist, crush or force it beyond the filter line. Pull the stick straight upward when removing it.
How long does an IQOS ILUMA session last?
A normal session lasts for up to approximately 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever limit is reached first.
The Holder or device normally vibrates when approximately 30 seconds or two puffs remain.
What is IQOS ILUMA AutoStart?
AutoStart begins preheating automatically when a compatible stick is inserted correctly into IQOS ILUMA or ILUMA PRIME.
If AutoStart has been disabled through a supported IQOS app, press the Holder button to begin preheating manually. Original ILUMA ONE is started with its button.
What do Lift Up and Double Tap do?
On IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA PRIME:
- Lift Up: raise the Holder when it is not in use to display whether one or two sessions remain.
- Double Tap: tap the Holder twice during a session to receive a vibration estimate of the remaining time.
Three vibrations indicate roughly 50–75% remaining, two indicate 25–50%, and one indicates less than approximately 25%.
Can I pause a session on the original IQOS ILUMA?
No. Pause Mode is exclusive to newer IQOS ILUMA i and i PRIME models. Removing the stick from an original ILUMA ends the active session.
Can a SMARTCORE stick be used more than once?
No. SMARTCORE sticks are single-use products. A previously heated stick will produce little or no usable aerosol and should not be reinserted.
IQOS ILUMA compatible sticks
Compatibility depends on the SMARTCORE format, not simply the size or appearance of the stick.
Which sticks are compatible with IQOS ILUMA?
The original IQOS ILUMA range is designed for compatible SMARTCORE STICKS. Depending on the country, these can include:
- TEREA heated tobacco sticks
- DELIA heated tobacco sticks
- LEVIA zero-tobacco nicotine sticks
Check the packaging for explicit IQOS ILUMA or SMARTCORE compatibility, as product availability differs by market.
Can I use HEETS with IQOS ILUMA?
No. HEETS are designed for older IQOS devices containing a heating blade. They do not contain the internal component required for SMARTCORE induction heating.
Inserting HEETS can produce no aerosol and leave tobacco material inside the ILUMA chamber.
Can I use TEREA in every IQOS ILUMA model?
Yes. Genuine TEREA SMARTCORE sticks are designed for IQOS ILUMA PRIME, IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA ONE, as well as newer ILUMA i models.
See the complete TEREA FAQ for more information about formats and varieties.
Do DELIA sticks work with IQOS ILUMA?
DELIA SMARTCORE sticks are compatible with IQOS ILUMA models in markets where they are officially available. They must not be used with older blade-based IQOS devices.
See the DELIA FAQ for details.
Do LEVIA sticks work with IQOS ILUMA?
Yes. LEVIA is a SMARTCORE-format stick designed for the IQOS ILUMA platform. It uses a plant-derived plug instead of tobacco but still contains and provides nicotine.
Read the LEVIA FAQ for more information.
Can I use Fiit, neo, KENT, veo or PULZE sticks in IQOS ILUMA?
No. These products are made for other heating systems. Similar dimensions do not make them compatible with SMARTCORE induction technology.
Use only sticks whose packaging explicitly identifies IQOS ILUMA compatibility.
Can TEREA from another country work in my IQOS ILUMA?
Genuine standard-format TEREA sticks generally use the same SMARTCORE technology across ILUMA markets. Flavor selection, packaging, labeling and legal availability can differ by country.
Inspect the pack for damage and confirm that it explicitly states IQOS ILUMA compatibility.
Can IQOS ILUMA sticks be used in an older IQOS device?
No. TEREA, DELIA and other SMARTCORE sticks contain an internal metal component and must not be inserted into devices with a heating blade.
Attempting to push a blade through a SMARTCORE stick can damage the device.
Where can I check compatibility for every heating system?
Use the heated tobacco stick compatibility guide to compare IQOS, lil, glo and PULZE formats.

Fully charge and reset the device. If capacity remains substantially below normal, the internal battery may be worn.
IQOS ILUMA troubleshooting
Most common problems can be narrowed down through charging, temperature checks, correct stick insertion and a reset.
How do I reset IQOS ILUMA or IQOS ILUMA PRIME?
- Place the Holder correctly inside the Pocket Charger.
- Press and continuously hold the Pocket Charger button for 10 seconds.
- Keep holding until the lights switch off and then briefly blink white to confirm the reset.
How do I reset IQOS ILUMA ONE?
Press and hold the ILUMA ONE button for approximately seven seconds and then release it. The status lights should switch off, blink twice and illuminate again to confirm the reset.
Why is my IQOS ILUMA blinking red?
A red blinking light indicates a device error. Fully charge the device, remove it from nearby magnets and perform the correct reset procedure.
If the red light returns after resetting, stop using the device and contact official IQOS support for the relevant country.
Why is my IQOS ILUMA blinking white?
Normal pulsing white lights can indicate preheating, charging or that a session is nearly finished.
Repeated patterns can indicate a specific condition:
- Three white flashes on an ILUMA or ILUMA PRIME Holder can indicate that it is outside its operating temperature range.
- Eight white flashes can indicate that the Holder can provide only one session and may require support.
- On ILUMA ONE, all lights blinking white twice and switching off usually indicates an out-of-range temperature.
What does a blinking yellow light mean?
A yellow blinking light normally means that the battery is low or depleted. Charge the Holder, Pocket Charger or ILUMA ONE with a compatible power source.
If the warning remains after a full charge, inspect the charging contacts, cable and port before resetting the device.
Why is my IQOS ILUMA not turning on?
- Connect it to a compatible wall charger.
- Wait if the battery was completely discharged.
- Check that the USB-C port and cable are clean and dry.
- Try another compatible cable, adapter and power outlet.
- Perform a reset after the device has received some charge.
Why does IQOS ILUMA not detect a TEREA stick?
Confirm that the stick is genuine, unused and compatible with IQOS ILUMA. Insert it gently up to the filter line without twisting.
Try another stick from the pack. If several compatible sticks are not detected, fully charge and reset the device.
Why does my TEREA stick produce weak or no aerosol?
Common causes include:
- A previously used stick
- Incorrect or incomplete insertion
- A damaged, crushed or damp stick
- Improper storage in excessive humidity or dryness
- A nearly depleted device battery
- The session ending before use begins
Test a fresh stick stored under normal conditions. If multiple sticks produce the same result, reset the device.
Why does my IQOS ILUMA session end early?
A session ends when either the time limit or puff limit is reached. Faster use may reach the puff limit before the maximum time.
The session may also stop if the stick is moved or removed, the battery is low, the device is outside its operating temperature or an error occurs.
Why does my IQOS ILUMA Holder provide only one session?
First confirm that the Holder was fully charged and that two solid Holder status lights were visible.
Clean the external charging contacts and reset the device. Eight repeated white flashes can indicate that the Holder battery can no longer support two sessions and requires official diagnosis.
What should I do if a stick breaks inside IQOS ILUMA?
Allow the device to cool. If the remaining section is visible, remove it gently without pushing it deeper.
Official guidance for ILUMA ONE permits careful use of a wooden toothpick, but never use metal needles, knives or excessive force. If the piece cannot be removed safely, stop using the device and contact support.
When should I stop using the device and contact support?
Seek professional assistance when:
- A red error returns after resetting
- The device becomes unusually hot
- The charging port, battery or casing is damaged
- The Holder is no longer detected by the Pocket Charger
- A broken stick cannot be removed safely
- Battery capacity has dropped substantially
Do not open the device or attempt to replace its battery yourself.
Cleaning, storage and safety
ILUMA needs less maintenance than blade-based IQOS devices, but it should still be kept dry, clean and protected from extreme temperatures.
Does IQOS ILUMA need cleaning?
Routine internal cleaning is not normally required. SMARTCORE sticks are sealed, so loose tobacco does not usually remain inside the chamber.
Do not insert an older IQOS cleaning brush into an ILUMA Holder. Wipe the outside, cap and charging contacts with a clean, dry and soft cloth.
Is IQOS ILUMA waterproof?
No. The device should not be treated as waterproof. Protect the Holder, Pocket Charger and USB-C port from rain, liquids and excessive humidity.
If it becomes wet, switch it off, disconnect it from power and allow it to dry naturally before use. Do not charge a wet device.
What temperature can IQOS ILUMA operate in?
The supported range depends on the exact model. Official guidance commonly lists approximately 0–50°C for two-piece ILUMA Holders and 0–40°C for ILUMA ONE.
If the device is too hot or cold, allow it to return gradually to normal room temperature. Do not use external heaters, freezers or direct heat.
How should IQOS ILUMA and its sticks be stored?
- Keep the device dry and away from direct sunlight.
- Do not leave it inside a hot or freezing vehicle.
- Keep the charging port and Holder chamber free from debris.
- Store sticks in their original packaging.
- Avoid excessive humidity and very dry environments.
- Keep devices and sticks away from children and pets.
Why must TEREA and other SMARTCORE sticks not be disassembled?
SMARTCORE sticks contain a sharp internal metal heating component. They must not be cut, swallowed or taken apart.
Do not use a damaged stick and keep both new and used sticks away from children and pets.
Can I travel with IQOS ILUMA?
Airline and destination rules vary. Devices containing lithium batteries are generally placed in hand luggage rather than checked baggage, while tobacco and nicotine import allowances depend on local law.
Review the airline, transit-country and destination rules before departure. See the travel and regulations FAQ for a detailed checklist.
Is IQOS ILUMA risk-free?
No. IQOS ILUMA and compatible nicotine products are not risk-free. Nicotine is addictive, and these products are intended only for adults who already use tobacco or nicotine.
IQOS is not a smoking-cessation treatment. The safest option for health is not to use tobacco or nicotine products.
