How do TEREA sticks work?
When TEREA is inserted into an IQOS ILUMA device, an electromagnetic field heats the metal element positioned inside the stick. That element heats the prepared tobacco from the center without an exposed blade entering it.
The intended process does not burn the tobacco. It produces a nicotine-containing aerosol rather than cigarette smoke and ash.
What is inside a TEREA stick?
A TEREA stick contains several functional sections:
- A sealed front section that helps contain tobacco material
- A stainless-steel-coated internal heating element
- Prepared and compressed tobacco
- An airflow chamber
- A protective wrap
- A cooling section and filter
- A flavor capsule in Pearl varieties
The internal metal element is essential to induction heating and is the reason TEREA must not be cut, swallowed or disassembled.
Do TEREA sticks contain real tobacco?
Yes. Standard TEREA sticks contain processed tobacco leaf formed into a compact tobacco section designed for controlled induction heating.
LEVIA is the IQOS ILUMA-compatible alternative that does not contain tobacco, although LEVIA still provides nicotine.
Do TEREA sticks contain nicotine?
Yes. Tobacco naturally contains nicotine, and TEREA produces a nicotine-containing aerosol when heated in an IQOS ILUMA device. Nicotine is addictive.
How much nicotine is in one TEREA stick?
There is no single reliable global figure that applies to every TEREA variety and market. Packaging may display a locally required machine-measured emission value, but that is not the same as total nicotine content or the amount absorbed by an individual user.
Nicotine delivery also depends on the device, puff duration, puff frequency and individual use. Check the specific regional packaging instead of applying a figure from another country or flavor.
Are there nicotine-free TEREA sticks?
No. TEREA are made with tobacco and contain nicotine. LEVIA contains no tobacco but still provides nicotine, so it is not a nicotine-free substitute.
How many TEREA sticks are in a pack?
A standard TEREA pack normally contains 20 sticks. Carton size and packaging configuration can vary by country.
Selected markets have also introduced TEREA XL packs containing 26 sticks.
What is TEREA XL?
TEREA XL is a larger pack format introduced in selected markets. For example, the German range includes 26-stick XL packs for several popular varieties.
XL refers to the number of sticks in the pack. The sticks are not longer, do not provide a longer session and use the same compatible IQOS ILUMA technology. TEREA XL is not available in every country.
Why are TEREA shorter than cigarettes?
TEREA are built specifically for an electronic heating system. Their processed tobacco is compressed into a shorter section, followed by airflow, cooling and filter components.
Their size should not be used to estimate session length or nicotine delivery.
How long does one TEREA stick last?
A standard IQOS ILUMA session lasts up to approximately 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever limit is reached first. Puff frequency and duration can cause the puff limit to be reached sooner.
On ILUMA i devices, FlexPuff may add up to four puffs when the device determines that conditions allow it. Extra puffs are not guaranteed and remain within the maximum active session time.

Do the same TEREA sticks work with ILUMA and ILUMA i?
Yes. Standard genuine TEREA SMARTCORE sticks work across original ILUMA and newer ILUMA i devices. A separate “ILUMA i-only” TEREA format is not required.

Can I use TEREA with IQOS 3 DUO?
No. IQOS 3 DUO contains a heating blade and is designed for HEETS. Pushing its blade into a sealed TEREA stick can damage the blade.
Can I use TEREA with IQOS ORIGINALS or IQOS 2.4?
No. IQOS ORIGINALS DUO, ORIGINALS ONE, IQOS 2.4 PLUS, IQOS 3 and IQOS MULTI are blade-based devices. TEREA are not compatible with them.
Can I use HEETS in an IQOS ILUMA device?
No. HEETS do not contain the internal metal element required by the ILUMA induction system. They may fit physically, but they will not heat correctly and can leave tobacco residue inside the chamber.

Can TEREA be used with lil SOLID, glo or PULZE?
No. TEREA should not be used with lil SOLID, glo, PULZE or other heating systems. Those devices use different heating methods and consumable formats.
Will TEREA from another country work in my IQOS ILUMA?
Genuine standard-format TEREA generally use the same SMARTCORE technology across IQOS ILUMA markets. However, flavor formulation, naming, packaging and availability can differ between countries.
Check that the pack explicitly states IQOS ILUMA compatibility and has not been opened, damaged or exposed to unsuitable storage conditions.

What are TEREA Pearl sticks?
TEREA Pearl varieties contain a flavor capsule inside the filter. Before clicking, the stick provides its underlying tobacco and aroma profile. Clicking the Pearl releases an additional cooling, fruit, herbal or floral flavor.
How do I click a TEREA Pearl capsule?
Locate the marked capsule area on the filter and press it firmly between your fingers until you feel or hear a click. The capsule can normally be activated before insertion or during the session.
Press only the filter area. Do not bend, cut or crush the tobacco section.
What happens if I do not click the Pearl?
The stick can still be used. It will provide its original base profile without releasing the additional capsule flavor.
Can a TEREA capsule be clicked more than once?
Each individual capsule releases its contents once. Pressing it again will not create another flavor release. Follow the pack markings if a regional variety contains more than one capsule.
Do TEREA pack colors mean the same thing worldwide?
Not always. Similar colors can represent different names or aroma profiles in different markets. The same flavor name can also receive redesigned packaging over time.
Use the printed product name and official regional description rather than identifying a flavor solely by pack color.
Why are some TEREA flavors unavailable in certain countries?
National rules concerning tobacco flavors, menthol, capsules, packaging and product registration differ. Manufacturers also select different portfolios for individual markets.
A variety available in Japan, Europe or the Middle East may therefore have no official equivalent in another country.

Correct insertion, proper storage and a charged device have the greatest effect on session consistency.
How do I use a TEREA stick correctly?
- Confirm that the IQOS ILUMA device has sufficient charge.
- Remove one fresh TEREA stick from the pack.
- Insert it filter-first upward until the printed filter line.
- Do not twist or force the stick.
- Wait for the device to finish preheating and vibrate.
- Pull the used stick straight upward after the session.
Can I reuse a TEREA stick?
No. TEREA are designed for one heating session. A used stick may still look intact because it was not burned, but most of its intended aerosol has already been released.
Reusing it normally produces weak flavor and little aerosol.
Can I light or smoke TEREA like a cigarette?
No. TEREA contain a metal heating element and are designed exclusively for electronic induction heating. Never light, burn, cut or smoke a TEREA stick as a conventional cigarette.
Why is my TEREA producing weak aerosol?
Common causes include:
- The stick was previously used
- The stick is not inserted to the filter line
- The device battery is low
- The pack was exposed to excessive humidity or dryness
- The stick is crushed, wet or damaged
- The device is outside its operating temperature range
- The session’s puff or time limit has already been reached
Try a fresh stick from a properly stored pack. If several sticks perform poorly, charge and reset the device.
Why will a TEREA stick not fit into my IQOS ILUMA?
Do not force it. Check whether the stick is bent, swollen, previously used or being inserted at an angle. Also confirm that the device is actually an IQOS ILUMA model.
Inspect the chamber for visible debris or part of a broken stick. Do not insert metal tools into the device.
Why does TEREA taste burnt, bitter or unusual?
TEREA should not undergo normal combustion inside an ILUMA device. An unusual taste can result from a damaged or old stick, unsuitable storage, repeated use, overheating of the device or a flavor profile that differs from the expected regional version.
Stop the session if there is visible smoke, melting, a strong burning smell or abnormal device heat. Allow the device to cool and inspect it before trying a new stick.
Why did the session stop when I moved the TEREA stick?
ILUMA devices monitor whether a compatible stick remains correctly positioned. Pulling it upward or moving it significantly can trigger AutoStop and end the session.
Once the session has ended, the same stick should not be expected to provide another complete session.
What should I do if TEREA breaks inside the device?
Let the device cool. Gently remove any section that can be gripped without pushing it deeper into the chamber.
Do not use needles, knives or excessive force. If the remaining part cannot be removed safely, stop using the device and obtain professional support.
Does using TEREA mean IQOS ILUMA never needs cleaning?
Routine internal cleaning is not normally required because TEREA are sealed and the device has no exposed blade.
External surfaces, charging contacts and the cap can still be wiped with a clean, dry, soft cloth. If a damaged stick leaves debris inside, follow the device manual rather than using an older IQOS blade-cleaning brush.
TEREA storage, freshness and authenticity
Heat, moisture, air and poor storage can change draw, aroma and aerosol quality.
Do TEREA sticks expire?
Tobacco sticks gradually lose moisture and aroma, but there is no universal TEREA shelf-life figure that applies to every market. Some packs use production or batch codes, while others may show a best-before date required by local rules.
Follow any date printed on the pack. Do not use sticks that are wet, visibly damaged, moldy or have a strongly abnormal smell.
How should TEREA sticks be stored?
- Keep them inside their original closed pack
- Store them in a cool and dry indoor location
- Avoid direct sunlight and heating equipment
- Protect them from rain, condensation and excessive humidity
- Do not leave them inside a hot or freezing vehicle
- Keep them away from children and pets
Should TEREA be stored in a refrigerator or freezer?
No. Refrigeration and freezing can create condensation and disturb the moisture balance of the tobacco and filter materials.
Normal cool, dry room storage is preferable.

Lower exposure to some chemicals cannot automatically be interpreted as a specific reduction in disease risk. Public-health authorities state that heated tobacco products are harmful and have not been scientifically proven to help people quit smoking.

Are TEREA tar-free?
“Tar” is traditionally associated with the particulate residue measured from cigarette smoke created by combustion. TEREA produce an aerosol rather than conventional cigarette smoke.
That distinction does not mean the aerosol is harmless or equivalent to clean air. Avoid treating “no combustion” or “no ash” as a claim of safety.
Do TEREA sticks smell?
Yes. TEREA aerosol and used sticks have a noticeable odor, although it differs from cigarette smoke and normally does not include the smell of burning tobacco.

Can TEREA be used indoors?
