Ploom AURA vs Ploom X Advanced: Modes and Compatibility

  • Post category:Comparisons

Ploom AURA vs Ploom X Advanced is a comparison of heating modes, charging requirements and hardware compatibility. The changes are substantial, but several features often associated with AURA were already present on X Advanced.

This guide compares Japanese-market specifications and support documentation. It is a document-based comparison, not a hands-on performance test. Mode names, accessories and app support can differ in other countries.

Quick answer

What changes from Ploom X Advanced to AURA?

AURA has four heating modes and a narrower, taller body. Japanese X Advanced support lists two heating profiles, and both models have Auto-Start and Bluetooth. Their approved Japanese Ploom stick families overlap. Body-fitted accessories do not transfer, but certain charging accessories do.

Heating modes: four versus two in Japan

JT identifies the Japanese X Advanced heating system as POWER HEATFLOW and AURA’s as SMART HEATFLOW. Those are product specifications; they do not establish an independently measured difference in flavor, emissions or health risk. [2] [1]

AURA changes session length as well as the heating profile

X Advanced is not limited to one profile

Current Japanese support documents Default and Balanced modes. Default is the original setting; Balanced changes the heating profile. Switching requires a compatible smartphone connection and JT ID. [3]

Unlike AURA’s modes, these two X Advanced profiles do not change the published session duration, charging time, stick count or maximum heating temperature. Both retain an approximately five-minute session. [4] [12]

Mode names are regional

The table uses Japanese names. A name such as “Balanced” on a different device or in another market is not enough to establish an identical heating program.

Charging: why 90 and 110 minutes both appear for X Advanced

The 90-minute X Advanced figure is the charging time for approximately 20 sticks. It is explicitly labeled that way in the English user guide. Current Japanese support gives approximately 110 minutes for a full charge and approximately 23 sticks from that charge. [9] [7] [8]

AURA’s corresponding empty-to-full figure is approximately 180 minutes with the specified adapter. Its session count depends on the selected mode. [6]

Keep the charging endpoint consistent

Compare 180 minutes with 110 minutes when discussing a full charge. Use the 90-minute figure only with its 20-stick qualification. Mixing those endpoints exaggerates the difference.

Likewise, “up to 27 sticks” describes AURA in its three-minute Eco mode. It is not evidence that AURA delivers more five-minute sessions: its Standard estimate is 20, while X Advanced’s full-charge estimate is 23. These are published estimates, not a controlled battery test between the two devices. [5] [8]

AURA is narrower and taller, but not smaller in every dimension

Scroll sideways to see all columns on a small screen.

Published dimensions in width × height × depth order
ModelDimensions
Ploom AURA24.2 × 109.4 × 29.2 mm
Ploom X Advanced43.5 × 88.5 × 24.0 mm

AURA changes the broad X Advanced outline to a vertical form. The listed dimensions show a narrower body, additional height and greater depth. Calling it thinner in every direction would be inaccurate.

Dimensions also explain why fitted panels and covers must be treated separately from stick compatibility.

Do AURA and X Advanced use the same sticks?

In Japan, both official support pages name EVO, MEVIUS and CAMEL tobacco sticks made for Ploom. EVO compatibility is therefore not exclusive to AURA. [13] [14]

This is a regional compatibility list. It does not establish support for every product sold under the same brand elsewhere, or for older Ploom capsule systems. A shared brand name is less specific than the device family printed on the pack.

The Ploom sticks FAQ separates the regional ranges. For other device platforms, see the heated tobacco stick compatibility guide.

Which X Advanced accessories work with AURA?

The Japanese answer has specific exceptions. Ploom lists the following charging accessories as compatible with AURA; other accessories such as fitted front panels are excluded because the shapes differ. [15]

Second-generation Ploom X docking stationYesSpecified model PX1.5CD-Black

The standard Japanese AURA kit contains a USB-C cable but no AC adapter. Ploom separately confirms support for the dedicated X Advanced adapter and cable. Kit contents can differ for reused devices or regional bundles. [16]

“All old accessories work” and “no old accessories work” are both too broad. The useful distinction is between fitted body parts and specifically approved charging equipment.

Auto-Start and Bluetooth are shared features

JT’s 2023 X Advanced announcement already described automatic heating after stick insertion. Its Japanese support also documents manual start. AURA retains automatic heating, so Auto-Start alone does not distinguish the two generations. [2] [11] [1]

X Advanced connected functions

Japan’s support lists mode changes, device-location functions, Auto-Start control, device lock and battery status. Bluetooth was not introduced with AURA. [18]

AURA connected functions

AURA adds its four-mode controls within a connected feature set that includes device radar, lock, battery and device status, plus firmware updates when released. [17]

For Japanese AURA support, Android uses My Ploom, while iOS uses Connect Browser. Do not assume an imported device follows the app instructions or account requirements of another market. [19]

General AURA operation and troubleshooting remain in our Ploom AURA FAQ.

Neither model is maintenance-free

Ploom Japan advises cleaning both devices about once a month, or sooner if stick insertion becomes tight. AURA’s guidance also covers a dirty slide-cover surface. X Advanced’s instructions explicitly retain regular cleaning even with CleanSeal sticks. [20] [21]

Both procedures require the device to cool and the front panel to be removed during cleaning to prevent unintended automatic heating. Their detailed cleaning and drying steps are model-specific; follow the relevant manufacturer instructions linked below rather than applying one model’s procedure to the other.

NARNAY assessment

Final verdict: more mode flexibility, with charging and accessory tradeoffs

AURA’s clearest technical changes are its four modes, variable session durations and different body design. X Advanced already provides automatic start, Bluetooth and two Japanese heating profiles.

What changes materially

AURA spans three-, five- and six-minute sessions. Its body dimensions and fitted accessories also change.

What the specifications do not show

AURA is not uniformly ahead on charging or battery figures. Full charging takes longer, and its maximum session count depends on Eco mode.

The Japanese stick families overlap, while accessory compatibility depends on the exact part. That makes this a redesign with specific tradeoffs, rather than evidence that every function has improved.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ploom X Advanced have different heating modes?

Yes. Japanese support lists Default and Balanced, selectable through a compatible smartphone connection. Both use approximately five-minute sessions; their published charging and stick-count specifications are the same. [3] [4]

Does Ploom AURA charge faster than X Advanced?

No, according to the Japanese full-charge figures: approximately 180 minutes for AURA and 110 minutes for X Advanced. The separate X Advanced 90-minute figure refers to enough charge for approximately 20 sticks. [6] [7] [9]

Can EVO sticks be used in Ploom X Advanced?

Yes. Ploom Japan lists EVO for both X Advanced and AURA, alongside the Japanese MEVIUS and CAMEL Ploom stick families. Check the local device and pack documentation outside Japan. [14] [13]

Will an X Advanced front panel fit AURA?

No. The bodies have different shapes. The Japanese compatibility exceptions cover specified charging equipment, including the WA-UN-06A adapter and PX1.5CD-Black second-generation dock, not the front panel. [15]

Is Auto-Start new on Ploom AURA?

No. X Advanced already had automatic heating on stick insertion. Both also support Bluetooth functions in the Japanese documentation. [2] [18] [17]

Does AURA always provide 27 sessions per charge?

No. Approximately 27 is the Eco-mode estimate. Standard, Strong and Long have different session durations and battery estimates. It is not a guarantee for every setting or battery condition. [5]
