If you have spotted metal inside a TEREA stick, it is easy to assume something has gone wrong. It has not: the metal is a built-in part of the heating system. What matters is where it sits, why IQOS ILUMA needs it, and why the stick should remain intact.

Why is there metal in a TEREA stick?
The metal is the stick’s heating element. It sits inside the tobacco section. When a TEREA stick is inserted into an IQOS ILUMA device, the induction system heats that element, which in turn heats the tobacco from within. What is inside a TEREA stick?
From the end inserted into the holder toward the mouthpiece, TEREA has a front seal, a tobacco section containing the metal heater, an air-flow chamber, a cooling section and a filter. A protective paper wrap surrounds the assembly. The important detail is that the metal sits within the tobacco section, not in the filter or loose inside the holder. IQOS component guide.

Front seal and tobacco
The seal helps keep tobacco material out of the holder. The prepared tobacco surrounds the internal heating element.
Air flow and cooling
The air-flow chamber carries the aerosol through the stick; the cooling section sits between that chamber and the filter.
Filter and wrap
The filter forms the mouthpiece. The paper wrap holds the sections together and protects the outside of the stick.
The cutaway is a reading aid. Do not cut a real TEREA stick to check the layout: the manufacturer specifically warns against taking it apart because the metal has sharp edges.
How does the metal in TEREA heat the tobacco?
The easiest way to understand the design is to compare where the heater lives. In an older IQOS with a heating blade, the blade is in the holder and enters a compatible HEETS stick. What kind of metal is inside TEREA?
PMI calls it a metal heating element coated with stainless steel. That tells us its function and the material of the coating; it does not give a detailed specification of every layer or a named alloy grade. Treating it as a generic piece of wire, a removable insert or the same blade found in an older IQOS would miss how this system is built. PMI product glossary.
In an intact stick, the element is part of the sealed tobacco section. If metal is exposed because a stick has been torn or crushed, do not try to pull it out to inspect or reuse the stick. Follow the manufacturer’s instruction not to disassemble TEREA.
Is the metal in TEREA safe?
There are two different questions hidden in that sentence. One concerns what happens if the stick is opened or swallowed. The other concerns the aerosol produced during normal use. The evidence available for those questions is different, so they deserve separate answers.

The manufacturer’s physical safety warning is direct. A claim such as “there is no metal in what you inhale” would be a different claim and needs appropriate testing. What if a TEREA stick breaks, opens or is swallowed?

Do not use an opened or visibly damaged stick
Set it aside so exposed metal cannot be handled accidentally. This is a precaution drawn from the manufacturer’s warning against disassembly and sharp edges.

Do not pull out the metal part
The element belongs inside the stick. Cutting, peeling or taking TEREA apart creates the handling hazard the manufacturer warns about.

Dispose of it after it has cooled
Keep both used and damaged sticks out of children’s and pets’ reach. Follow local waste-disposal rules; do not assume that the presence of metal makes the whole stick suitable for a metal-recycling bin.
If a piece remains inside the holder, stop using that holder until the obstruction is resolved and consult the instructions for your exact ILUMA model or IQOS support. Which IQOS devices can use TEREA?

Final verdict
The metal has a job — and a handling warning
TEREA contains a metal heating element because IQOS ILUMA heats the tobacco through induction. It is a built-in part of an intact stick, not something to remove. The practical rules are simple: match TEREA to an ILUMA device, leave the stick assembled, and take the manufacturer’s warning about sharp edges and swallowing seriously.
That technical explanation does not establish that the aerosol is free of metals or that heated tobacco is risk-free. Those are separate health questions, and the presence of a metal part alone cannot settle them.
