Heated Tobacco Device Not Working? Care & Troubleshooting Guide
Use this guide when an IQOS, glo, Ploom, lil, Pulze or another heated tobacco device will not turn on, charge, heat or complete a session. It also explains safe cleaning, resets, blinking lights, stuck sticks, weak draw, battery problems and signs that a device should no longer be used.
Diagnose in order
Check the battery, charger, temperature, consumable compatibility and device cleanliness before assuming that the device is faulty.
Follow the exact model
Reset and cleaning procedures differ between IQOS ILUMA, blade-based IQOS, glo Hyper, glo HILO, Ploom, lil and Pulze devices.
Stop if damaged
Do not continue using a device with a swollen battery, broken heating element, liquid inside, excessive heat or visible physical damage.
Start here: five safe troubleshooting steps
- Stop the session and let the device cool. Remove the used stick if it can be removed normally.
- Charge the device. Use a compatible cable and power adapter, then leave it charging for at least 20–30 minutes before trying again.
- Inspect the basics. Check the charging port, contacts, covers and air openings for dust, debris or moisture. Make sure the correct stick is being used.
- Restart or reset the device. Follow the procedure for the exact model. Holding a button for the wrong length of time may activate a different function instead.
- Stop if the error returns. Persistent errors, unusual heat, battery swelling, a damaged heater or a hot charging port require professional support or device replacement.
Important: light colors and vibration patterns are not universal. A red, orange or flashing white light can mean different things on different models.

Power, charging and indicator lights
These checks cover the most common searches, including “IQOS not working,” “glo not charging,” “heated tobacco device blinking red” and “device will not heat.”
Why will my heated tobacco device not turn on?
The most common reason is a completely discharged battery. Connect the device to a compatible wall charger and wait at least 20–30 minutes before trying again. A deeply discharged battery may not display lights immediately.
Also check that:
- The device is not locked or in sleep mode.
- The charging cable and adapter are working.
- The device is within its permitted operating temperature.
- Any removable holder is correctly seated in its charger.
- Covers or front panels required by the model are fitted correctly.
If the device remains completely unresponsive after charging and following the correct reset procedure, its battery or internal electronics may have failed.
Why is my IQOS, glo, Ploom, lil or Pulze device not charging?
Disconnect the device and inspect the cable, adapter and USB port in good light. Pocket lint, dust, moisture or a loose connector can prevent charging.
- Use a cable and adapter that meet the manufacturer’s specification.
- Try a wall socket instead of a low-power computer USB port.
- Allow a very hot or cold device to return to room temperature.
- Clean external contacts with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not insert metal tools into a USB port.
If the cable only works at a certain angle, the port may be physically damaged. Stop charging if the connector becomes unusually hot, produces an odor or shows signs of melting.
What does a red, orange or blinking white light mean?
Indicator colors cannot be interpreted without the exact model. Depending on the device, a warning light may indicate:
- A low or empty battery.
- A holder that is not charging correctly.
- A device that is too hot or too cold.
- A cleaning or reset reminder.
- An incorrectly inserted or unsupported stick.
- A damaged heater, battery or internal electronic fault.
Start by charging the device, checking its temperature and performing the correct model-specific reset. Do not rely on advice for another model simply because the light color looks the same.
Why does the device vibrate or flash but not start heating?
The device may have detected an unsupported stick, incomplete insertion, low battery, temperature problem or internal error.
Remove the stick without twisting excessively, allow the device to cool and try a new compatible stick. Confirm that it is inserted in the correct direction and only to the depth shown in the model’s instructions.
If the same error appears with several compatible sticks, perform a reset. Do not push a stick deeper to force the session to start.
Why does a heated tobacco session stop early?
An early shutdown can be caused by a low battery, temperature protection, an accidentally pressed button, a poorly inserted stick or an ageing battery.
Fully charge the device, let it reach room temperature and test it with a fresh compatible stick. If available, use the standard heating mode rather than a higher-power or boost mode.
Sessions are intentionally time-limited, so a normal automatic shutdown at the end of the programmed cycle is not a fault.
Why is the battery running out faster than before?
Lithium-ion batteries gradually lose capacity. Cold weather, frequent high-power modes, repeated sessions and leaving a device unused with an empty battery can also reduce practical runtime.
Charge it fully with a suitable charger, restart it and compare the number of sessions over several days. A sudden decline, random shutdowns, swelling or excessive heat may indicate battery failure rather than normal ageing.
How to clean and care for a heated tobacco device
Cleaning requirements depend on how the device heats its consumable. A method suitable for one system can damage another.
How often should a heated tobacco device be cleaned?
There is no universal cleaning interval. Blade and chamber systems generally require more maintenance than sealed induction systems.
- Blade-based IQOS devices: the manufacturer has traditionally recommended cleaning approximately every 20 uses.
- glo Hyper Pro: regular cleaning approximately every 20 sessions is recommended.
- Ploom AURA: clean approximately once a month or when the oven feels tight during stick insertion.
- IQOS ILUMA and glo HILO: routine internal chamber cleaning is generally unnecessary because the compatible sticks are designed to keep material sealed inside.
Clean sooner if the model permits it and you notice restricted airflow, difficult stick insertion or visible residue.
Does IQOS ILUMA need cleaning?
IQOS ILUMA devices use induction heating with sealed SMARTCORE sticks and do not have the exposed blade found in older IQOS generations. Routine internal cleaning is therefore not required.
Keep the exterior, cap area, charging contacts and USB port clean and dry. Do not insert the cleaning tool intended for blade-based IQOS models into an ILUMA chamber.
If part of a stick becomes lodged inside, let the device cool and follow the removal instructions for the exact ILUMA model.
How do I clean a blade-based IQOS device safely?
Turn the holder off, remove the cap and allow it to cool for at least 30 seconds. Insert the designated IQOS cleaning tool straight into the chamber without applying pressure. Rotate it gently two or three times, then remove it straight.
- Never press, scrape or strike the heating blade.
- Do not twist the cleaning tool aggressively.
- Do not use water, household chemicals or compressed air.
- Do not clean while the holder is hot.
If the blade is bent or broken, the holder should not be used or repaired at home.
How do I clean a glo Hyper or glo Hyper Pro?
Let the device cool completely. Open the top heating chamber and the lower cleaning door, then pass the designated cleaning brush gently through the chamber from both ends.
Remove loose residue without forcing the brush. The glo brush may be rinsed separately where permitted by its care instructions, but it must be fully dry before being placed back inside the device. Never rinse or immerse the device itself.
Does glo HILO or HILO Plus need internal cleaning?
glo HILO and HILO Plus use compatible consumables with StickSeal technology. According to glo guidance, routine internal cleaning is not required for continued performance.
These devices do not use the same cleaning door as glo Hyper models. Do not insert a standard chamber brush or improvised tool. If a stick breaks inside, use only the approved HILO Stick Remover and follow the model instructions.
How should a Ploom AURA be cleaned?
Ploom AURA uses CleanSeal technology to reduce loose material, but periodic oven cleaning is still recommended. Remove the front panel, open the slider and use the cleaning sticks specified for Ploom AURA.
Some official regional instructions allow the cleaning stick to be slightly moistened with water. Follow only the manual supplied for your market, remove any remaining moisture and complete the recommended empty heating cycle before normal use.
This moisture instruction is specific to the relevant Ploom AURA procedure and should not be applied to other devices.
How should lil SOLID and Pulze devices be cleaned?
These models contain a heating pin or rod that can be damaged by sideways force. Let the device cool and use only its supplied or approved cleaning accessories.
For Pulze devices, clean gently around the heating rod and chamber. Do not attempt to pull off a top cap that the manufacturer describes as non-removable.
lil SOLID generations may have different cleaning and reset procedures, so verify the exact model before inserting a brush or cleaning tool.
Can I clean the device with alcohol, water or compressed air?
Do not place water, alcohol, solvent, household cleaner or compressed air inside a heated tobacco device unless the manufacturer’s manual explicitly authorizes a specific method.
Liquids can damage sensors, batteries and heating electronics. Compressed air may push residue deeper into the device or damage delicate components. For exterior surfaces, use a soft dry cloth unless the official instructions state otherwise.
Stick, airflow and session problems
Many apparent device faults are caused by incompatible consumables, incorrect insertion, damaged sticks or blocked airflow.
Why will the stick not fit into my device?
First confirm compatibility. Similar-looking sticks are not interchangeable across all heating systems. For example, TEREA and LEVIA are intended for IQOS ILUMA systems and must not be used in older blade-based IQOS holders.
Do not force, compress, trim or modify a stick. If the correct consumable suddenly becomes difficult to insert, let the device cool and inspect the chamber for a broken fragment or residue.

Why is there little aerosol or a weak draw?
Common causes include:
- An old, damaged, damp or previously used stick.
- The wrong consumable for the device.
- Incorrect insertion depth or orientation.
- A dirty airflow path in a model that requires cleaning.
- A device that is too cold.
- A battery that cannot maintain normal heating power.
Try a fresh compatible stick from a properly stored pack. Allow the device to reach room temperature and clean it only according to the correct model instructions.
Why does the taste seem burnt, bitter or unusual?
An unusual taste may result from a damaged or dried-out stick, chamber residue, repeated use of the same consumable, excessive consecutive sessions or incorrect stick compatibility.
Stop the session, allow the device to cool and try a new compatible stick. Clean the chamber if the model requires cleaning. Discontinue use if the device produces smoke, a burning-plastic odor or visible damage.
What should I do if a stick is stuck inside the device?
Turn the device off and let it cool completely. Remove the stick using the normal straight withdrawal method or the approved removal accessory for that model.
- Do not use a knife, needle, screwdriver or metal tweezers.
- Do not push the fragment deeper into the chamber.
- Do not apply sideways pressure to a blade, pin or heating rod.
- Do not activate another heating cycle to burn the fragment away.
If the fragment cannot be removed without force, contact the manufacturer’s support service.
Why does a stick break during removal?
Sticks may break when they are twisted, removed at an angle, inserted too deeply, exposed to moisture or used in an incompatible device. Residue in a cleanable chamber may also grip the stick.
Follow the model’s normal end-of-session removal method. Some older devices require the cap to be lifted before the stick is withdrawn, while newer systems may use direct removal.
Can a heated tobacco stick be used twice?
No. Heated tobacco and nicotine sticks are designed for a single session. Reheating a used stick generally produces poor aerosol and taste, and it can leave additional residue inside compatible cleanable devices.
A used stick should not be reversed, reinserted or transferred to a different device.
How to reset IQOS, glo and Ploom devices
Reset procedures are model-specific. Confirm the full product name before holding any buttons.

Overheating, water damage and physical faults
Troubleshooting should stop when a problem could involve the battery, heating element or charging electronics.
Is it normal for a heated tobacco device to become warm?
Mild warmth during heating or charging can be normal. Excessive heat is not. Stop using the device if it becomes painful to hold, heats while inactive or becomes much hotter than it did previously.
Disconnect it from power and place it on a stable, non-flammable surface away from direct sunlight. Do not cool it in a refrigerator, freezer or water.
What should I do if the device is too hot or too cold?
Most devices temporarily disable heating or charging outside their permitted temperature range. Move the device to a dry location at normal room temperature and allow it to adjust naturally before restarting it.
Do not heat a cold device with a hair dryer, radiator or open flame. Do not rapidly cool a hot device because condensation can form inside.
What should I do if the device or charging port gets wet?
Turn the device off and disconnect all cables. Do not charge, heat or reset it while moisture may be present. Wipe only the exterior and allow the device to dry naturally in a ventilated location.
Water resistance ratings, where present, do not make a device waterproof. For example, resistance to light rain does not mean that immersion or heavy splashing is safe.
Do not use rice, a hair dryer, an oven or compressed air. If the device was submerged or liquid entered the charging port, seek manufacturer support before using it again.
What should I do if the USB port becomes hot?
Disconnect the cable immediately. Check for debris, moisture, corrosion or a bent connector. Let the device and charger cool before testing with a known-compatible cable and adapter.
Do not continue charging if the port repeatedly becomes hot, the cable fits loosely, charging cuts in and out, or there is discoloration, melting or an unusual smell.
Can a broken IQOS blade, lil pin or Pulze heating rod be repaired?
A broken or bent heating element is not a safe do-it-yourself repair. Stop using the device and do not attempt to straighten, glue or replace the component.
Continued use may damage sticks, create an electrical fault or cause fragments to become lodged inside the chamber. Contact the appropriate manufacturer support service or replace the device.
What are the warning signs of a damaged battery?
Stop using and charging the device if you notice:
- A swollen, raised or separating casing.
- Unusual heat while the device is idle.
- A chemical or sweet solvent-like odor.
- Leaking material, hissing or crackling.
- Sudden shutdowns or extremely rapid battery loss.
- Melting, discoloration or deformation near the charging port.
Keep the device away from combustible materials and follow local rules for lithium-ion battery disposal. Do not place a damaged battery device in general household waste.
Can I open or repair a heated tobacco device myself?
No. These devices contain a lithium-ion battery, heating electronics and temperature-control components. Opening the casing can cause a short circuit, battery damage or unsafe heating.
Safe user maintenance is limited to the cleaning, stick removal, charging and reset procedures specifically described for the model.
