Ploom AURA FAQ: Features, Compatible Sticks and How to Use
Clear answers about Ploom AURA compatibility, EVO and regional stick ranges, the four Heat Select modes, battery life, charging, the Ploom App, cleaning and common device problems.
Quick answer: what is Ploom AURA?
Ploom AURA is JTI's current-generation all-in-one heated tobacco device. It heats a compatible stick without burning it, starts automatically when a stick is detected and offers four heating profiles through the Ploom App. It was launched in Japan in May 2025 alongside the premium EVO stick brand and subsequently entered additional international markets.
EVO is the main global stick family for AURA, but compatibility is not identical worldwide. Japan also officially lists selected MEVIUS and CAMEL sticks for Ploom devices, while Germany offers tobacco-free, nicotine-containing LYO sticks for Ploom AURA. The local Ploom website and the exact pack label should always take priority over a compatibility list from another country.

About Ploom AURA
The essentials for searches such as “what is Ploom AURA,” “is Ploom AURA a vape,” “Ploom AURA release date” and “how does Ploom AURA work.”
Who makes Ploom AURA?
Ploom AURA is made by Japan Tobacco Group and marketed internationally by Japan Tobacco International, commonly shortened to JTI. It is the successor to the Ploom X and Ploom X Advanced generation.
When was Ploom AURA released?
Ploom AURA launched in Japan on May 27, 2025, with nationwide Japanese retail availability beginning in July 2025. Switzerland became the first market outside Japan announced as part of its international rollout, followed by launches across additional Ploom markets.
Availability, colors, app functions and compatible sticks continue to differ by country in 2026.
Is Ploom AURA the newest Ploom device?
Yes. As of September 2026, AURA is JTI's current global Ploom hardware generation. Limited colors and regional bundles may be newer releases, but they use the same AURA platform rather than representing a separate successor model.
How does Ploom AURA heat a stick?
Smart HeatFlow controls heat around the inserted stick inside an oval heating chamber. The tobacco is heated rather than ignited, so the process does not produce cigarette ash. AURA has no exposed blade that pierces the stick.
Is Ploom AURA a vape?
No. Ploom AURA is a stick-based heated product rather than a refillable e-liquid vape. EVO, MEVIUS and CAMEL products contain tobacco; LYO is tobacco-free but contains nicotine and is still a sealed stick made for compatible Ploom devices. None of these sticks is a refillable vape pod.
Does Ploom AURA produce smoke or ash?
It heats rather than burns the intended stick, so it produces an aerosol instead of conventional cigarette smoke and does not create cigarette ash. It can still produce a noticeable odor and airborne aerosol, and local smoke-free rules may apply to its use.
What colors does Ploom AURA come in?
The four original device colors are Jet Black, Rose Gold, Navy Blue and Luna Silver. Other colors and limited editions have appeared in individual markets. Removable front panels and fabric back covers provide additional combinations, but the available palette is country-specific.
Ploom AURA compatible sticks
Compatibility is the most important distinction on this page because the Ploom stick catalog changes by market.
| Stick family | Ploom AURA compatibility | Market note |
|---|---|---|
| EVO | Yes | Main global Ploom AURA tobacco-stick range |
| MEVIUS for Ploom | Yes, where officially listed | Officially supported in Japan; variants differ by market |
| CAMEL for Ploom | Yes, where officially listed | Officially supported in Japan; not a universal CAMEL cigarette |
| LYO | Yes, where officially sold for AURA | Tobacco-free nicotine sticks available in selected 2026 markets including Germany |
| TEREA / DELIA / LEVIA | No | Designed for IQOS ILUMA induction devices |
| HEETS / Fiit | No | Designed for other internal-heater platforms |
| neo / veo / virto / rivo | No | Designed for specific glo devices |
| Cigarettes | No | Never insert or light a cigarette in the device |
Which sticks work with Ploom AURA?
EVO is the safest global answer because it is JTI's current international stick brand developed for Ploom. However, the complete answer is regional: Japan also lists MEVIUS and CAMEL sticks made for Ploom, while selected European markets offer LYO sticks for AURA.
Look for explicit Ploom or Ploom AURA compatibility on the sealed pack. A familiar brand name alone is not enough.
Are EVO sticks made specifically for Ploom AURA?
EVO launched alongside AURA as JTI's premium global heated tobacco stick brand and is optimized for Ploom's Smart HeatFlow system. EVO packs contain sealed, single-use sticks and do not require a separate pod or liquid cartridge.
Can MEVIUS or CAMEL sticks be used in Ploom AURA?
In Japan, yes: JT's official AURA launch information states that the listed EVO, MEVIUS and CAMEL heated tobacco sticks can be used with all current Ploom devices. This does not mean ordinary MEVIUS or CAMEL cigarettes are compatible, and it does not guarantee that every regional stick carrying those names is intended for AURA.
What are LYO sticks, and do they work with Ploom AURA?
LYO is a newer tobacco-free stick range containing nicotine and a plant-based substrate. Official German Ploom pages list LYO for Ploom AURA in Arctic Mint and Wild Berry varieties as of 2026. Availability and legal classification differ by country, so do not assume that LYO is supported in every AURA market.
Do Ploom X Advanced sticks work with Ploom AURA?
Often yes when they are genuine sticks officially designated for the current Ploom platform. Japan explicitly supports its listed Ploom sticks across Ploom devices, and EVO is used with AURA in international markets. Because names and formulations differ by country, verify the local pack rather than relying only on its age or appearance.
Can TEREA, DELIA or LEVIA be used in Ploom AURA?
No. These SMARTCORE sticks contain an internal metal element and are designed for IQOS ILUMA induction heating. Ploom AURA uses a different chamber and heating profile. Do not insert them even if their diameter looks similar.
Can HEETS, Fiit, neo, veo, virto or rivo be used in Ploom AURA?
No. These products belong to IQOS blade devices, lil SOLID or specific glo platforms. Physical fit does not establish safe compatibility. The wrong stick can give poor heating, become stuck, leave excess residue or damage the chamber.
Use the heated tobacco stick compatibility guide before mixing any device and stick families.
Can EVO sticks be used with IQOS ILUMA or glo?
No. EVO is engineered for Ploom's Smart HeatFlow system. IQOS ILUMA uses induction-compatible SMARTCORE sticks, while glo devices use their own platform-specific formats. Never test compatibility by forcing a stick into another heater.
What is CleanSeal on Ploom sticks?
CleanSeal is the sealed end inserted into the Ploom device. It helps keep loose tobacco or substrate inside the stick, reducing debris in the heating chamber. It lowers maintenance needs but does not make the device completely maintenance-free.
How to use Ploom AURA and choose a heating mode
AURA is designed for automatic operation, but the touch-sensitive button area provides a manual fallback when Auto-Start does not activate.
| Mode | Approx. preheat | Approx. session | Estimated sessions per charge | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / Balanced | 25 sec | 5 min | 20 | Balanced everyday setting and default behavior |
| Strong / Intense | 30 sec | 3 min | 25 | Stronger, shorter profile |
| Long / Delicate | 25 sec | 6 min | 19 | Longest and gentler session |
| Eco / Battery Saver | 25 sec | 3 min | 27 | Maximum estimated sessions per charge |
How do I use Ploom AURA?
- Open the top slider and check the battery indication.
- Insert a compatible stick straight into the chamber with the CleanSeal end first.
- Stop at the marked insertion line; do not twist or force the stick deeper.
- With Auto-Start enabled, heating begins automatically. Otherwise, press the touch-sensitive area below the LED line for about one second.
- Wait for two vibrations before starting the session.
- At the end, pull the stick straight upward, allow it to cool and close the slider.
How do I activate a new Ploom AURA for the first time?
A new device arrives in Shipping or Transport Mode. Connect the USB-C cable briefly to wake it. If you continue to a full first charge, the LED line flashes ten times and the device vibrates when that initial charge is complete. On later full charges, the LED normally flashes twice and turns off.
What is Auto-Start on Ploom AURA?
Auto-Start detects a correctly inserted stick and begins preheating without a separate button press. If the stick is inserted too quickly or more than about ten seconds after opening the slider, detection may fail. Remove and reinsert it correctly or start heating manually with the touch area.
Where is the button on Ploom AURA?
Normal operation uses a touch-sensitive button area just below the LED line rather than a clearly raised mechanical button. A separate recessed reset button is located behind the removable front panel. Do not confuse the two.
How long does Ploom AURA take to heat up?
Preheating takes about 25 seconds in Standard/Balanced, Long/Delicate and Eco/Battery Saver modes. Strong/Intense takes about 30 seconds. Two vibrations indicate that the device is ready.
How long is a Ploom AURA session?
Standard/Balanced lasts about five minutes, Strong/Intense about three minutes, Long/Delicate about six minutes and Eco/Battery Saver about three minutes. The device uses a time limit rather than a fixed number of puffs.
How many puffs can I take from one Ploom AURA stick?
AURA does not impose a published puff-count limit within the selected session time. The practical number depends on draw length and frequency. The session still ends when its three-, five- or six-minute timer expires.
How do I know when a Ploom AURA session is ending?
Near the end, the LED line counts down downward. A short vibration indicates approximately 20 seconds remaining. Remove the used stick straight upward after the session and let it cool before disposal.
Can I stop a Ploom AURA session early?
Yes. Pull the stick straight upward, allow it to cool and close the top cover. Do not reinsert and reheat the same used stick: the consumables are designed for one session only.
How many Ploom AURA sessions can I use consecutively?
Up to three consecutive sticks are supported. Remove the used stick, let it cool safely, close and reopen the slider, and insert a fresh compatible stick. Very hot or cold conditions can temporarily limit operation.
How do I change the Ploom AURA heating mode?
Pair AURA with the regional Ploom App or supported web app over Bluetooth, open the Heating Mode control and select the preferred profile before inserting a stick. The mode cannot be changed during an active session. A new device starts in Standard/Balanced mode.
Ploom AURA battery, charging and app
Battery estimates change sharply with the selected Heat Select profile, so a single “sessions per charge” figure can be misleading.
How many sessions does Ploom AURA provide per charge?
Official estimates are approximately 20 sessions in Standard/Balanced mode, 25 in Strong/Intense, 19 in Long/Delicate and 27 in Eco/Battery Saver. These are not guarantees; cold weather, battery aging and individual usage can lower the result.
How long does Ploom AURA take to charge?
A full charge is specified at approximately 180 minutes. An approximately 90-minute charge can provide power for around 15 sessions in the default profile under stated test conditions. Charger output, temperature and battery condition affect the actual time.
Can I use Ploom AURA while it is charging?
No. Ploom's current instructions state that AURA cannot be used while charging. Wait until it is disconnected before starting a session.
Which cable and charger should I use for Ploom AURA?
Use the supplied USB-C cable and the power specification listed in the regional manual. An AC adapter may not be included in every starter kit. Avoid damaged cables, wet ports and uncertified high-power adapters with unsupported voltage profiles.
How do I know when Ploom AURA is fully charged?
During normal charging, the LED line pulses. At full charge it flashes twice and then turns off. Ten flashes are associated with completing the first charge while leaving Shipping Mode, not every charging cycle.
What can the Ploom App do with AURA?
Depending on country and app version, it can change heating modes, show battery information, enable a personal lock, locate a nearby or last-connected device through Device Radar, provide support access and deliver device updates. Registration and age verification may be required.
How do I pair Ploom AURA with my phone?
- Enable Bluetooth and the permissions requested by the official regional app.
- Open and close AURA's top slider.
- Press the touch-sensitive button area for approximately five seconds to enter pairing mode.
- Select the device in the Ploom App and follow the on-screen registration steps.
Do not press the recessed reset button behind the front panel when you only want to pair the device.
Can Ploom AURA be used without the app?
Yes. Basic heating, Auto-Start, battery indication and manual start work without a phone. The app is needed for features such as changing the four heating profiles, device lock, Device Radar and supported updates.
Why can I not download or connect to the Ploom App?
The app, account system and iPhone connection method are country-specific. Confirm that your phone and account region match an officially supported Ploom market, enable Bluetooth and location permissions, keep AURA close to the phone and remove any old pairing before retrying. Some iOS markets use a Bluetooth-capable web app rather than a conventional App Store download.
Cleaning and troubleshooting Ploom AURA
Begin with simple, model-correct checks. Stop using the device if it is swollen, physically damaged, wet inside or unusually hot while idle or charging.
How often should I clean Ploom AURA?
Ploom recommends cleaning AURA about once a month or sooner if inserting the correct stick becomes unusually tight. CleanSeal reduces loose material, so AURA generally needs less maintenance than open-ended stick systems, but dust and residue can still collect around the slider and chamber.
How do I clean Ploom AURA safely?
- Allow the device to cool fully and remove the front panel.
- Open the slider.
- Use the designated Ploom cleaning stick, only slightly moistened as directed in the manual.
- Gently wipe the inner chamber, slider area and the two small projections near the top.
- Remove all remaining moisture and refit the panel.
- Run one empty heating session without a stick, as directed by Ploom.
Never pour water into the chamber, submerge the device or scrape it with metal tools.
How do I reset Ploom AURA?
- Remove the front panel.
- Use a thin, blunt object to press the recessed reset button for about five seconds.
- Release it when the LED line flashes rapidly ten times and the device vibrates.
Resetting restores device settings to their defaults and may require app pairing again.
What do five vibrations on Ploom AURA mean?
Five vibrations indicate a temperature error. The device may have been exposed to an environment below approximately 5°C or above approximately 35°C. Move it to normal room temperature and allow time to adjust before retrying. Do not heat or cool it rapidly with an appliance.
What does a red LED on Ploom AURA mean?
A red indication represents an error rather than normal heating. First let the device reach room temperature, remove the stick, charge it correctly and perform the official reset. If a red LED dot remains illuminated for about five seconds, Ploom identifies this as a permanent-failure indication that a reset will not repair; contact the official support channel for the device's country.
Why does nothing happen after I insert a stick?
- Confirm the device has charge and is not locked.
- Check that the slider was opened and the correct stick was inserted straight to its marked line.
- Try manual start by pressing the area below the LED for about one second.
- Remove debris if the chamber is tight, but only after the device cools.
- Reset the device if the manual procedure also fails.
Why did my Ploom AURA session stop early?
Common causes include reaching the mode's time limit, low battery, a temperature error, removing or moving the stick too far, or a device fault. Check the LED pattern and vibrations, let the device return to room temperature and try a fresh compatible stick after charging. Do not reuse the interrupted stick if it has already been heated.
Why is Ploom AURA producing weak aerosol or flavor?
- Confirm that the pack is compatible with AURA in your market.
- Use a fresh, correctly stored stick and insert it to the marked line.
- Wait for the ready vibrations before drawing.
- Try slower, steadier draws rather than sharp repeated puffs.
- Check the selected mode, battery level and chamber cleanliness.
Persistent weak performance across several fresh sticks can indicate an airflow, heater, sensor or battery problem.
What should I do if a stick breaks inside Ploom AURA?
Stop the session and let the device cool. Hold it with the opening downward and remove loose material gently with the designated cleaning tool. Do not push a knife, needle or screw into the chamber. If the fragment cannot be removed without force, use official service to avoid damaging the heater or sensors.
Is Ploom AURA waterproof?
No waterproof rating should be assumed. If the device becomes wet, stop using and charging it, wipe only the exterior and let it dry naturally in a ventilated place. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, oven or rice. Liquid inside the USB-C port or body requires inspection before reuse.
Can I remove the front panel while Ploom AURA is heating?
Do not remove or change panels during a session. Finish or stop the session, remove the stick and allow the device to cool first. The panel covers the reset control and part of the device body; removing it while hot can interrupt safe handling.
Why will my Ploom AURA not charge?
Check the cable, adapter and USB-C port for damage or debris, let the device reach room temperature and try the supplied cable with the specified power source. If the port is wet, burnt, loose or unusually hot, disconnect it immediately. Do not open the device or replace its lithium battery yourself.
Ploom AURA comparisons, travel and safety
A newer device is useful only when its correct consumables, app and official support are available where it will be used.
Ploom AURA vs Ploom X Advanced: what changed?
AURA changes from the wider, pebble-shaped Ploom X Advanced body to a slimmer vertical design. Its main functional upgrade is the four-mode Heat Select System, which can trade session intensity, duration and battery life. It also introduces updated Auto-Start behavior, a new LED layout, removable front and back styling parts and the EVO-led global stick ecosystem.
Ploom X accessories do not automatically fit AURA because the body shape and panel system changed. Stick compatibility should still be checked on the local Ploom site.
Ploom AURA vs IQOS ILUMA: what is the key difference?
Ploom AURA uses Smart HeatFlow chamber heating with EVO and other regionally approved Ploom sticks. IQOS ILUMA uses induction to heat SMARTCORE sticks such as TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA. Their sticks, accessories, apps and cleaning procedures are not interchangeable.
AURA's distinctive feature is four app-selectable profiles with sessions of different lengths. ILUMA's distinctive feature is blade-free induction through a metal element inside each compatible stick.
Is Ploom AURA worth upgrading to from Ploom X Advanced?
AURA is the stronger choice if you want a slimmer body, four selectable modes, up to 27 estimated Eco sessions or the current app and accessory ecosystem. Keeping X Advanced can still make sense if it works safely, its compatible sticks remain locally available and the extra modes do not matter to you.
Can I take Ploom AURA on an airplane?
Battery-powered smoking devices generally belong in carry-on baggage, protected against accidental activation, and must not be used or charged on board. Remove the stick and close the slider before packing. Airline, airport, transit-country and destination rules can be stricter.
Check the complete heated tobacco travel and regulations FAQ before departure.
Can Ploom AURA and sticks be carried across borders?
Device ownership, nicotine-product legality, flavor restrictions, personal allowances and customs duties vary independently. A product legally sold in one country may be restricted in another. Check the destination customs and health authorities before carrying AURA, EVO, LYO or any other sticks across a border.
Is Ploom AURA risk-free?
No. Heated tobacco and nicotine products are not harmless. Tobacco sticks produce an aerosol containing nicotine and other chemicals, while tobacco-free LYO sticks still contain addictive nicotine. These products are for adults who already use tobacco or nicotine, not minors, non-users or pregnant people.
Can Ploom AURA help me quit smoking?
Ploom AURA is not a licensed stop-smoking medicine. Anyone who wants to quit tobacco or nicotine should use evidence-based cessation support from a healthcare professional or official quit service rather than relying on a consumer heated tobacco device as treatment.
