IQOS ILUMA i basics

Essential answers about the technology, models and differences from earlier IQOS devices.

What is IQOS ILUMA i?

IQOS ILUMA i is a family of heated-stick devices using the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM. Instead of a heating blade entering the tobacco, energy is transferred to a metal heating element located inside each compatible SMARTCORE stick.

The family consists of IQOS ILUMA i PRIME, IQOS ILUMA i and the all-in-one IQOS ILUMA i ONE.

What is the difference between IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i?

Both generations use bladeless induction heating and compatible SMARTCORE sticks. The newer ILUMA i generation adds more interactive features.

IQOS ILUMA i and i PRIME include a Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery. Original two-piece ILUMA devices do not offer the same complete feature set.

For a detailed guide to the previous generation, see IQOS ILUMA FAQ.

Is IQOS ILUMA i the same as IQOS ILUMA i PRIME?

No, but their core technology and main smart functions are very similar. Both have a separate Holder and Pocket Charger, Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery.

The main difference is design. ILUMA i PRIME uses a more premium wrap-style Pocket Charger, while ILUMA i uses a conventional door-style charger.

Is IQOS ILUMA i PRIME more powerful than IQOS ILUMA i?

Not in a way that should substantially change normal heating performance. The two devices share the same basic heating platform and smart functions. PRIME is primarily the premium design option rather than a higher-power version of ILUMA i.

Which IQOS ILUMA i model should I choose?
  • Choose IQOS ILUMA i for the strongest overall balance of smart features and a familiar two-piece design.
  • Choose IQOS ILUMA i PRIME if premium materials and the wrap-style Pocket Charger matter to you.
  • Choose IQOS ILUMA i ONE if portability, simple controls and an all-in-one body are more important than Pause Mode or Touch Screen.

You can also use the heated tobacco device selection guide to compare different systems.

Does IQOS ILUMA i have a heating blade?

No. IQOS ILUMA i is a bladeless system. The heating element is contained inside the compatible SMARTCORE stick, so there is no exposed ceramic blade inside the Holder.

This also means that sticks made for older blade-based IQOS devices must not be inserted into an ILUMA i device.

Is IQOS ILUMA i a vape?

No. IQOS ILUMA i is a heated-stick device, not an e-cigarette. It uses compatible solid sticks rather than a tank, pod or nicotine-containing e-liquid.

Both categories produce an aerosol, but their consumables and heating mechanisms are different.

How long does an IQOS ILUMA i session last?

A standard session lasts for up to approximately 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever limit is reached first. Preheating normally takes about 20 seconds.

FlexPuff may add up to four additional puffs when the device determines that conditions allow it, but the overall active session remains within the maximum time limit.

Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery

The smart functions are the main difference between ILUMA i and earlier ILUMA devices.

What does the IQOS ILUMA i Touch Screen show?

The Touch Screen on IQOS ILUMA i and i PRIME can display:

  • Preheating progress
  • Remaining session time
  • Available Holder uses
  • Pause Mode availability and countdown
  • Battery or device-status indications

IQOS ILUMA i ONE does not have a Touch Screen.

What is IQOS ILUMA i Pause Mode?

Pause Mode allows an active session to be paused for up to 8 minutes and then resumed. It is available only on IQOS ILUMA i and IQOS ILUMA i PRIME.

Pause can normally be activated once during the first or second consecutive use in Performance Mode, within the first 3 minutes or first 8 puffs.

If the session is not resumed within 8 minutes, the Holder switches off and the session ends.

How do I pause and resume IQOS ILUMA i?
  1. Confirm that the Pause symbol is available on the Touch Screen.
  2. Swipe down across the entire Touch Screen to pause.
  3. Wait for the vibration confirming that the pause has started.
  4. Swipe up across the entire Touch Screen when you are ready to resume.
  5. Wait for the Holder to preheat again and vibrate before continuing.
Why is Pause Mode not available on my IQOS ILUMA i?

Pause may be unavailable when:

  • The Holder is operating in Eco Mode
  • You are already on the third consecutive use
  • Pause has already been used during the current charging cycle
  • More than 3 minutes or 8 puffs have passed
  • The gesture did not cover the entire Touch Screen
  • The feature is disabled in a supported IQOS app or web app

Pause Mode is not supported by IQOS ILUMA i ONE.

What is FlexPuff?

FlexPuff is an automatic feature available across the ILUMA i range. The device analyzes the way a session is used and may provide up to four additional puffs.

FlexPuff is not manually activated and additional puffs are not guaranteed during every session. The feature does not make the maximum active session longer than approximately 6 minutes.

Why did I not receive extra puffs from FlexPuff?

This does not necessarily indicate a fault. FlexPuff activation depends on the individual puff pattern and how much aerosol has already been consumed.

It may not activate if the normal puff limit has already been effectively used. FlexPuff also does not activate during a session in which Pause Mode has been used.

What is FlexBattery?

FlexBattery allows the Holder battery behavior to be adapted through two modes on IQOS ILUMA i and i PRIME:

  • Performance Mode: up to two consecutive sessions with Pause available for one session, or up to three consecutive sessions when Pause is not used.
  • Eco Mode: prioritizes long-term Holder battery care and normally provides one session before the Holder is recharged.

Mode selection through an IQOS app or web app may not be supported in every country. IQOS ILUMA i ONE does not have FlexBattery.

Why does the screen show only two uses if the Holder supports up to three?

This is normal. The third Performance Mode session is not displayed at the beginning of the charging cycle. If Pause has not been used, one additional available session can appear after the second session.

What are AutoStart and AutoStop?

AutoStart begins preheating after a compatible stick is inserted correctly. AutoStop can end the session when the stick is removed or displaced.

If automatic preheating does not start, swipe up on the ILUMA i or i PRIME Touch Screen. On ILUMA i ONE, press the device button for approximately one second.

How to use IQOS ILUMA i

Correct insertion, preheating and stick removal help prevent interrupted or unusually short sessions.

How do I use IQOS ILUMA i or IQOS ILUMA i PRIME?
  1. Charge the Pocket Charger and place the Holder inside to charge it.
  2. Remove the Holder from the Pocket Charger.
  3. Insert a compatible SMARTCORE stick, filter end facing upward, up to the line printed on the filter.
  4. Wait for automatic preheating or swipe up on the Touch Screen.
  5. Begin after the second vibration confirms that preheating is complete.
  6. Near the end, the Holder vibrates and indicates approximately two puffs or 30 seconds remaining.
  7. Remove the used stick straight out and return the Holder to its charger.
How do I use IQOS ILUMA i ONE?
  1. Slide the protective cap open.
  2. Insert a compatible SMARTCORE stick up to the filter line.
  3. Wait for AutoStart or press the button for approximately one second.
  4. Begin after the second vibration.
  5. Remove the used stick when the session finishes.
  6. Close the protective cap after use.
How far should I insert a TEREA, DELIA or LEVIA stick?

Insert the stick gently until the line printed on its filter reaches the top of the Holder or device. Do not force, twist or push the stick beyond its normal stopping point.

Excessive force can deform the stick, interrupt AutoStart or make removal more difficult.

Should I twist the stick when inserting or removing it?

No. Insert and remove the stick using a straight, gentle movement. Twisting is unnecessary in a bladeless ILUMA device and can damage the stick.

Can I stop an IQOS ILUMA i session early?

Yes. Removing the stick ends the active session. On models with Pause Mode, you can temporarily pause instead when the Pause symbol is available.

Once a session has ended, the same used stick should not be reinserted for another full session.

IQOS ILUMA i compatible sticks

Stick compatibility is determined by the SMARTCORE format, not merely by the physical size of the consumable.

Which sticks are compatible with IQOS ILUMA i?

IQOS ILUMA i devices are designed for compatible SMARTCORE STICKS. Depending on local availability, these include:

  • TEREA heated tobacco sticks
  • DELIA heated tobacco sticks
  • LEVIA zero-tobacco nicotine sticks

Always check the packaging for IQOS ILUMA or SMARTCORE compatibility because brand availability and product ranges differ between countries.

Can I use HEETS with IQOS ILUMA i?

No. HEETS are intended for earlier blade-based IQOS systems and do not contain the internal element required for SMARTCORE induction heating.

Do not insert HEETS into IQOS ILUMA i, i PRIME or i ONE. They may fail to heat and can leave material inside the device.

Can I use Fiit, neo, KENT, veo or PULZE sticks in IQOS ILUMA i?

No. These consumables are designed for other heating systems. A similar shape does not make a stick compatible.

IQOS ILUMA i should only be used with sticks whose packaging explicitly states compatibility with IQOS ILUMA or the SMARTCORE system.

Do all TEREA sticks work with every IQOS ILUMA i model?

Standard genuine TEREA SMARTCORE sticks are designed to work across the IQOS ILUMA family, including ILUMA i PRIME, ILUMA i and ILUMA i ONE.

There is no separate TEREA format required exclusively for the “i” generation. Regional flavor availability and packaging can still differ.

Are DELIA sticks compatible with IQOS ILUMA i?

Yes, DELIA SMARTCORE sticks are compatible with ILUMA i models in markets where they are officially available. They must not be used with older blade-based IQOS devices.

Read more in the DELIA FAQ.

Are LEVIA sticks compatible with IQOS ILUMA i?

Yes. LEVIA is designed for the IQOS ILUMA platform, including ILUMA i devices. LEVIA contains a plant-derived plug instead of tobacco, but it still provides nicotine.

Zero tobacco does not mean nicotine-free or risk-free. See the LEVIA FAQ for more details.

Can a SMARTCORE stick be used more than once?

No. TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA sticks are single-use consumables. After one completed or interrupted heating session, the used stick should be removed and disposed of according to local rules.

Reusing a heated stick usually produces poor results and is not the intended use of the system.

Where can I see the complete stick compatibility chart?

See the heated tobacco stick compatibility guide for IQOS, lil, glo and PULZE device families.

Charging and battery questions

Charging time and battery behavior differ between the two-piece models and the all-in-one ILUMA i ONE.

How long does IQOS ILUMA i take to charge?
  • IQOS ILUMA i and i PRIME: approximately 135 minutes for a fully charged Pocket Charger.
  • IQOS ILUMA i ONE: approximately 90 minutes for a full device charge.

Charging time can increase when the device is very cold, hot, deeply discharged or connected to an unsuitable power source.

How many sessions does a fully charged IQOS ILUMA i provide?

A fully charged ILUMA i or i PRIME Pocket Charger can provide approximately 20 Holder uses in total before the Pocket Charger itself needs recharging. The Holder can provide up to three consecutive uses in Performance Mode when Pause is not used.

The all-in-one ILUMA i ONE provides up to approximately 20 consecutive sessions from a full device charge. Actual results depend on battery age, temperature and individual use.

How do I check the battery level?
  • On ILUMA i and i PRIME, briefly press the Pocket Charger button to display its charge level.
  • Tilt the Holder toward you or briefly touch its screen to view Holder status.
  • On ILUMA i ONE, briefly press the device button and read the status lights.

Four illuminated charge indicators generally represent a high battery level, while a yellow or orange warning indicates that charging is needed.

Can IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i chargers or Holders be mixed?

According to IQOS compatibility guidance, corresponding two-piece ILUMA and ILUMA i Holders and Pocket Chargers can be cross-compatible. IQOS ILUMA i and i PRIME Holders can also be charged in each other’s compatible Pocket Chargers.

This does not apply to ILUMA i ONE because it is an all-in-one device with no removable Holder. Compatibility should still be checked when devices come from different regions or product generations.

Can I use an older IQOS ILUMA USB-C cable and power adapter?

Compatible USB-C cables and power adapters from the ILUMA range can normally be used with the corresponding ILUMA i devices. Use an undamaged adapter that matches the specifications in the device’s regional manual.

Avoid loose connectors, damaged cables and unverified high-power adapters.

Why is my IQOS ILUMA i battery draining quickly?

Common causes include:

  • Repeated consecutive sessions
  • Using the device in very hot or cold conditions
  • Frequent Pause Mode activation and reheating
  • An aging battery
  • Dirty charging contacts or an unreliable cable
  • Long periods without charging

Fully charge the system, clean only the external contacts with a dry cloth and perform a reset. Persistent loss of usable sessions can indicate battery wear requiring official support.

IQOS ILUMA i troubleshooting

Start with the correct stick, a sufficient charge, normal operating temperature and a device reset.

How do I reset IQOS ILUMA i or IQOS ILUMA i PRIME?
  1. Place the Holder correctly inside the Pocket Charger.
  2. Press and continuously hold the Pocket Charger button for approximately 10 seconds.
  3. Release it after the status lights switch off and the confirmation light sequence begins.

Keep holding for the complete interval even if the device appears to turn on or off after the first few seconds.

How do I reset IQOS ILUMA i ONE?

Press and hold the button on the device until the status lights switch off and the reset confirmation sequence appears.

Official regional instructions specify approximately 7–10 seconds, depending on the device version. Follow the timing stated in the manual supplied with your device.

Why is my IQOS ILUMA i not turning on?
  1. Connect the device to a compatible charger.
  2. Allow a deeply discharged battery time to display its first light.
  3. Check that the USB-C port and cable are clean, dry and undamaged.
  4. Try a different compatible cable, adapter or wall outlet.
  5. Perform the correct reset procedure for your model.

Stop charging if the device or cable becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal or shows visible damage.

Why is my IQOS ILUMA i not charging?

Check the charging port, USB-C connector and the contacts between the Holder and Pocket Charger. Remove visible dust using a clean, dry and soft cloth.

Make sure the Holder is seated correctly, the Pocket Charger is switched on and the power source is working. Then perform a reset. Do not place liquid or metal tools inside a charging port.

What does a blinking red light mean?

A blinking red light normally indicates an error requiring attention. First remove the device from nearby magnets, check the charge and perform a reset.

If the red light returns after resetting and fully charging the device, stop using it and contact official IQOS support for the relevant country.

What do blinking white lights mean?

Pulsing white lights can be part of normal preheating, charging or end-of-session behavior. Repeated white flashes can also indicate that the device is outside its supported operating temperature.

Move it to an environment between approximately 0°C and 40°C and allow it to return gradually to room temperature. Do not heat or cool it artificially.

What does a yellow or orange blinking light mean?

Yellow or orange blinking normally indicates a low or depleted battery. Charge the Holder, Pocket Charger or all-in-one device with a compatible power source.

If the warning remains after a full charge, clean the external charging contacts and reset the device.

Why is the IQOS ILUMA i Touch Screen not responding?
  • Use a clean, dry finger without gloves.
  • Swipe across the entire screen rather than only its center.
  • Check whether the screen is wet, dirty, scratched or damaged.
  • Confirm that the Holder is charged and within operating temperature.
  • Return the Holder to the Pocket Charger and reset the system.

A cracked or physically damaged screen should be inspected by official support rather than opened or repaired at home.

Why does IQOS ILUMA i recognize the stick but not heat it?

Confirm that the stick is a genuine compatible SMARTCORE stick and is inserted up to the filter line. Remove and replace any crushed, wet, damaged or previously used stick.

Also check the battery, operating temperature and device lights. If another compatible stick produces the same result, reset the device.

Why does my IQOS ILUMA i session end too early?

A session ends when either its time limit or puff limit is reached. Faster or deeper puffing can therefore reach the puff limit before six minutes.

Other possible causes include:

  • The stick moving far enough to trigger AutoStop
  • A low Holder battery
  • Extreme device temperature
  • A damaged or previously used stick
  • A device error requiring a reset
What should I do if a stick breaks inside IQOS ILUMA i?

Let the device cool, then gently remove only the part that can be gripped without inserting tools into the chamber.

Do not use needles, knives or other sharp objects. If part of the stick is lodged inside, stop using the device and request professional assistance.

When should I contact IQOS support?

Contact official support when:

  • A red error returns after charging and resetting
  • The device has visible battery, port or screen damage
  • The Holder is no longer detected by the Pocket Charger
  • The device becomes unusually hot during normal use or charging
  • Battery capacity drops substantially
  • A broken stick cannot be safely removed

Do not open the device or attempt to replace its internal battery yourself.

Cleaning, care and safety

ILUMA i requires less routine maintenance than blade-based IQOS devices, but careful storage and external cleaning still matter.

Does IQOS ILUMA i need cleaning?

Routine internal cleaning is not normally required. Compatible SMARTCORE sticks are sealed, and there is no exposed blade or loose tobacco touching the heating chamber.

Do not use an older IQOS cleaning brush inside an ILUMA i device. You may wipe its external surfaces, cap and charging contacts with a clean, dry, soft cloth.

Is IQOS ILUMA i waterproof?

It should not be treated as waterproof. Keep the Holder, Pocket Charger and USB-C port away from water and excessive humidity.

If the device becomes wet, switch it off, disconnect it from power and allow it to dry naturally. Do not charge a wet device or dry it using a hair dryer, oven or other direct heat source.

What temperature can IQOS ILUMA i operate in?

Official guidance commonly specifies an operating range of approximately 0°C to 40°C. Outside this range, the device may delay charging, flash white or temporarily refuse to start a session.

Allow it to return gradually to normal room temperature before trying again.

How should I store IQOS ILUMA i and its sticks?
  • Keep the device dry and away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not leave it inside a hot or freezing vehicle.
  • Protect the USB-C port and Holder chamber from dust and debris.
  • Keep sticks inside their original packaging until use.
  • Keep devices and nicotine sticks away from children and pets.
Why must SMARTCORE sticks not be disassembled?

SMARTCORE sticks contain an internal metal heating component. They must not be cut, swallowed or taken apart. A damaged or opened stick should not be inserted into the device.

Store new and used sticks safely away from children and pets and dispose of them according to local waste rules.

Can I travel with IQOS ILUMA i?

Transport rules depend on the airline and destination. Devices with lithium batteries are generally carried in hand luggage rather than checked baggage, while heated tobacco or nicotine stick limits depend on local law.

Check current airline, customs and destination-country rules before travel. See the travel and regulations FAQ for a detailed checklist.

Is IQOS ILUMA i risk-free?

No. Heated tobacco and nicotine products are not risk-free. Compatible sticks contain or provide nicotine, which is addictive, and they are intended only for adults who already use tobacco or nicotine products.

IQOS is not a smoking-cessation treatment. The safest option for health is not to use tobacco or nicotine products.
